Travel Tips

Traveling in a new country can bring a flood of emotions including anxiety, excitement, frustration, exhaustion, enjoyment, as well as many others. In order to make your journey safe and enjoyable, I have included a few travel tips that will help navigate your way through Belize.

  • Do not tip your taxi drivers, for it is not customary. And double check the policy at your resort. Some fares already include the price of gratuity, and you do not want to be double tipping.
  • Travel with enough to money to cover departure taxes.
  • Currency exchange is currently 2 Belize dollars, for to 1 US Dollar. There is no need to change your currency to Belize dollars - most businesses accept the American dollar.
  • Wear cotton! It is much more comfortable in the tropics with light fabric clothing.
  • If you are a woman traveling alone, read up on the Belizean customs. Men and women's roles are very set and knowing the "rules" can help with safer travel.
  • Fill prescriptions and take them along. Getting medication in Belize can be rather difficult when needing a specific medicine. Take along your prescriptions, just in case.
  • Check your country's requirements for getting into Belize. Be sure to bring the proper identification, certification, passports, and visas.
  • Get proper check ups and vaccinations before traveling. The tetanus/diphtheria shot is the most important, which should be current anyway.
  • Drink bottled water. Although most say the tap water is safe, you can never be too careful when drinking in a foreign country.
  • Bring bug repellant! There are bugs, but with repellant you will not even notice them.

Happy traveling!
