Transportation
There are many, many options for transportation in Belize. While the country of Belize is up-to-date with modern aircraft and motor vehicles, there is still a sense of a tropical island, with options of golf carts, electric bikes, and water craft. Some modes of transportation in Belize are better in some areas than others. Naturally, on most of Belize’s’ Cayes the best way to get around would be via water taxi or golf cart. Motor vehicles are not even allowed on some islands. On the other hand, while traveling through the rough terrain of southern Belize, a motor vehicle would be preferred. While in the rainforest and jungle, or exploring Mayan ruins, walking is the best transportation. This gives you a chance to see everything and leave the area undisturbed (peddle bikes are also recommended).
Aircraft - The major airlines in Belize include Tropic Air and Island Air, offering travel to most major cities in Belize, along with travel to the outer Cayes. Both are relatively well priced, traveling the same routes and offering the best long distance travel option in Belize.
Water Taxi - Available on the Cayes of Belize, and outer shoreline of the mainland. Although not always the cheapest option, it does quickly get you from place to place, and is very convenient for use on an outlying island.
Vehicles - For tourists visiting the Northern to Central districts of Belize, motor vehicles can be rented from the main Belize City International Airport in order to make your way around. However, due to the increased unstable government outside of the high tourist areas, and into the southern part of Belize, driving rental cars is not recommended. Not only are some of the roads unpaved, but most are unmarked, making it hard to find your way around.
Golf Cart - When staying in one area of Belize, golf carts are the way to go. They do not take very much fuel, making them a cheap mode of transportation. Even though they do not reach incredibly high speeds, Belize is a place for relaxation! Take it easy in a slow-paced vehicle and enjoy the great scenery around you!
