Scuba Diving

With this hemisphere’s largest barrier reef, Belize is bound to attract the attention of scuba divers. Scuba diving is one of Belize’s great attractions, with many diverse areas for recreational and professional diving alike. There are dive and tour shops covering the country of Belize, ready to find the perfect place for you to dive, equip you, and guide you throughout the clear waters.

The famous Blue Hole is a great attraction for all scuba divers. What was millions of years ago a group of dry caves is now known as the Blue Hole. After the upper parts of the caves crumbled, it left a giant hole which is more than 1000 feet across and 400 feet deep, making it an extraordinary place to scuba dive.

For barrier reef diving, there are 3 main places to go for the best adventure. Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Island, and Glover’s Reef are famous for their great diving sites, offering all a diver wants: great scenery and architecture and diverse, colorful ocean life. Lighthouse and Turneffe Island are filled with more divers, while the distance of Glover’s Reef provides a fairly secluded trip.

Four tips to successful scuba diving:

  • Plan ahead. There are many things that need to be in order before entering the water. Arranging transportation, equipment, dive guides, etc. before trips will save a lot of headache when you get to your dive location.
  • Hire a knowledgeable dive master. Being in the hands of a good instructor will make your diving trip a lot safer, as well as a lot more fun.
  • Bring the essentials. Be sure to pack your contact lenses, sunscreen, light snack, and any other necessities for dive trips. Leaving these crucial items at home can make for a rough trip.
  • Don't forget your certification! If there is one thing that could turn a dive trip bad, it would be not being able to dive. Remember the proper documentation you will need to enter the water.
